At the core of Caroline Davies's Elements of Water is a sequence recounting the journey of the Ark from the perspective of Noah's daughter-in-law, a character who remains both nameless and voiceless in the Bible. Through her recasting of this familar tale, Davies not only gives it new life, but also explores the devotion and tenderness of women for beings in their care. These ideas of nurturing are carried into the present day, reminding us that little has changed when people are given the power to chose one life over another. These poems are sensitive, finely-honed and vital.
